Porkie is my beloved dog. He is a 6 year old Yorkie although he still acts like he is a one year old puppy. I talk about Porkie all the time in class and even write about him when I teach writing. Encouraging your child to write about people, places, things, and pets are a great way to make writing fun for them. Just remember that inventive spelling is okay in Kindergarten. We want to help build their confidence. Of course, we can give suggestions of what they could do to become even better writers!
Remind them to:
- Label the pictures
- Begin the sentence with a capital letter
- Use sight words in your sentences
- Put spaces between the words
- Sound out the beginning, middle, and ending sound to help you write
- Stretch out the word slowly to help you spell
- Use punctuation such as a period, question mark, and exclamation point
- Write neatly
With positive feedback and encouragement, the children will learn to love writing!
