Fun And Fancy Friday!

Fridays are always everyone's favorite day of the school week. We look forward to fun activities and of course free choice centers. During free choice centers, children choose their own centers to go to! During snack, I shared Triscuit crackers with the class in celebration of learning "tr" blend words. The students were excited to taste the yummy treat. After comparing and contrasting the characters Pinkalicious and Fancy Nancy, we made fancy pointers using craft sticks and fancy gems! The students used the pointers to help them read their books and couldn't wait to read the room with their new fancy pointers! Oh yes, almost forgot to mention....some of us got a visit from the "Desk Fairy" after lunch. She gave stickers to the children with neat and organized desks! We don't know when she will be visiting us again but we do know that we will be ready with neat desks from now on!

Pinkalicious is...

Look what we learned about Pinkalicious last week!

We Are On The Reading Railroad!

We learned about words that begin with the "tr" blend. We listened to the book Freight Train and made our own trains in class! For our writing unit, we have been writing about things that we are interested in. Michael is very interested in Trucks and so he wrote a book about trucks. What a coincidence...we have been learning about the tr blend and how writers write about things that interest them! We discussed why we think Michael wrote the book and we listened to the book. Thanks to Michael, we learned a lot about trucks!

Fancy Nancy is....

We have been studying characters and their traits. We read Fancy Nancy and the Posh Puppy and thought about words we could use to describe Nancy. Tomorrow, we will read about Pinkalicious who is another character in a different story. We will describe her character traits just as we did with Fancy Nancy. Later on this week, we will use a venn diagram to compare and contrast the similarities and differences between Fancy Nancy and Pinkalicious!

IIM Duck Project Presentations

Our fall IIM unit was on ducks. We read many books about ducks and learned many facts about ducks. All of the children worked hard with their parents to work on a duck project to share with their classmates and Mrs.Scafidi's class. Even our principal Mrs. Nussbaum came to our class to see all the wonderful projects! She was very impressed with our vast knowledge about ducks. Tomorrow is the very last day the projects will be collected!

Bossy e

We have been learning about long vowels! We learned that when there is a letter e at the end of a short vowel word, it changes the word! We call silent e our bossy e because bossy e tells the vowel to say their names!

Storytelling in Kindergarten

Ms.Julia will be joining our class every Thursday to tell stories interactively. According to Ms.Julia, all we need to tell stories are our bodies, our voices, and our imaginations.

Kings and Queens of ings

We didn't get to go to the farm because of bus issues but we did something equally fun! We made crowns!! We are kings and queens of words with -ing. We thought of many words with the chunk -ing and wrote them on our crowns. Don't we look dash-ing?

Kindergarten Yogis

I went to a training last year called Move to Improve. I learned many ways to incorporate movement in learning and other fun exercised to benefit mental and physical health. This week I introduced Yoga to practice balance, focus, and stamina. I personally do yoga several times a week so I was very excited to share my interest with them. The tree pose was the most challenging!

A Sweet Day

The rain ruined our costume parade but it didn't ruin our spirits! We had an awesome time taking pictures in our costumes and getting a head start on our Halloween sweet tooth at the harvest bake sale.

Costume Parade Change of Date

Hi everyone!

I  received word at the end of the school day that the costume parade for our school will be held on Thursday, October 27th instead of Monday, October 31st. Notices will be sent out on Monday.  We will still have our Halloween party on the 31st as planned so you may send your child to school with their costumes on this day as well. I am so excited to see everyone in their costumes!

P.S. Today was Ms.Wagner's last day with K-125.  The good news is she is being placed in a first grade classroom in our school so we can still see her! She was only with us a short time but we had so much fun and we will all miss her dearly. Ms.Wagner brought us munchkins and goody bags! We wrote her letters to thank her and she promised to visit us as often as she can.

Meet Porkie the Yorkie!

Porkie is my beloved dog. He is a 6 year old Yorkie although he still acts like he is a one year old puppy. I talk about Porkie all the time in class and even write about him when I teach writing. Encouraging your child to write about people, places, things, and pets are a great way to make writing fun for them. Just remember that inventive spelling is okay in Kindergarten. We want to help build their confidence. Of course, we can give suggestions of what they could do to become even better writers!

Remind them to:

  • Label the pictures
  • Begin the sentence with a capital letter
  • Use sight words in your sentences
  • Put spaces between the words
  • Sound out the beginning, middle, and ending sound to help you write
  • Stretch out the word slowly to help you spell
  • Use punctuation such as a period, question mark, and exclamation point
  • Write neatly

With positive feedback and encouragement, the children will learn to love writing!

Reading Like Eeyore

We learned a new reading strategy! When we come to a word that we don't know, we sound out the word really slowly just like how Eeyore talks! We even stretch it out like Eeyore when we spell words!

How to Make a Personal Dry Erase Board

We love using dry erase boards to practice number writing, draw pictures, and write stories! It's so simple to make! All you need are:
1. Duct tape
2. Report covers
3. Lined or plain paper
4. Scissor

and voila!

Oops! It looks like the pictures are not in order. Unfortunately, my computer at home is broken so I have been using my IPad to update the blog. As a result, I am limited with various capabilities. Thank you for understanding! :)

Introducing....Ms.Wagner!

We are so excited to have Ms.Wagner join K-125 for The next few weeks! Ms.Wagner is an enthusiastic student teacher. Today was her first day in our class and she is already so impressed with all the students of K-125! Yay!

P.S.Kaitlyn Wu's mom has asked me to send out a reminder to R.S.V.P for Kaitlyn's birthday celebration! Party time!

Capturing Our Moments

Today we learned that writers visualize pictures in their mind to help them write. We practiced visualizing and drew a snapshot in our "cameras".
